LOCAL OFFER
LOCAL OFFER - Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

1.           How does the Early Years setting know if children need extra help and what should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs or disabilities?

At Marriotts we work closely as a team with parents/carers, staff and other agencies, where necessary, to provide support for all children.

Every child has a key worker assigned to them who is responsible for meeting and planning for the child’s individual needs. The children are observed regularly and we complete their next steps and progress checks. The staff monitor the children’s development and will raise any concerns with you if they feel that your child needs extra support. The SENCO will come up with any strategies that may help to support the children and staff in the setting. If parents have concerns about their child before they start at the nursery we can observe the child in the first few weeks that they attend and provide the parents with any feedback. If we feel that the child requires further support we will gain permission from the parents and begin a referral process. This means that we will request support from multi-professional agencies and everyone who is or becomes involved will be aware of any meetings/appointments that will take place.

2.           How will the setting staff support my child?

All staff we welcome all children into the setting and work together as a team to support all individuals during the session.

The SENCO staff as well as the child’s keyworker and the nursery management team will be responsible for introducing individual education plans to the child, working closely alongside the child’s parents at all times. Together we can decide on what works well for the child so that this can be implemented both at home and at nursery. It is important that regular communication occurs between the setting and the parents to find out how/if the strategies and individual education plan are working. If they are not working then we can review these and devise a different strategy.

3.           How will the curriculum be matched to my child’s needs?

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum (EYFS) where we plan activities for every child based on their individual interests. The EYFS is split into seven areas; Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Physical Development, Literacy, Maths, Understand the World and Expressive Arts and Design. The child’s activity will often cross into most, if not all, of the areas of the EYFS. We will provide the activities based on the child’s age; however this will be adapted if needed to suit the child more appropriately. We can reduce the size of the groups of children, provide more staff for certain activities where more support is needed, or ensure the activity is made simpler or more challenging for the child. Every child has an online Learning Journal. This is where we will provide evidence of observations and photos, as well as including their progress checks and any assessments that take place . Individual Education Plans will be drawn up by your child’s keyworker and SENCO with input from you and any professionals involved with your child.

4.           How will both you and I know how my child is doing and how will you help me to support my child’s learning?

We have an ‘Open Door’ policy where parents/carers are able to discuss concerns, issues and progress with the keycarer and other staff whenever is necessary.

We can offer appointments that suit parents for more formal meetings and we also hold 2 stay and play sessions a year where parents can come along and discuss their child’s development. Progress checks are completed throughout your child’s time at nursery as well as ‘Next Steps’ where we will advise what your child can be working towards at nursery and at home

If your child has an Individual Educational Plan we will set dates to review the plan so that we can talk about progress that is being made.

5.           What support will there be for my child’s overall development?

At Marriotts nursery we offer a pre start session before the child starts with us, at this time we discus with parents any concerns or issues the parent may have regarding the transition into nursery, we go through necessary paper work eg dietary requirements and health and development needs.

The setting provides a safe and stimulating environment where children can learn through play, socialise and have fun.

The Keyworker system ensures that the children make good attachments with people who are important to them, supporting their confidence and self-esteem. All staff are trained in Paediatric First Aid and attend regular child protection training.  We have policies in place to ensure that all children at Marriott’s Nursery are safe.

6.           What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting?

There are many services and organisations we can call upon for advice or support.

We work with other professionals such as speech and language therapists, sensory support, social workers, physiotherapists and our Early Years Childcare Advisor (EYCA). We will always provide the parents with feedback from the agencies that come into the setting to see their child. We can also arrange meetings here at the setting between the nursery, other professionals and parents.

7.           What training has the staff, supporting children with SEND, had, or is having?

Staff at Marriott’s are, nursery nurse trained with a  minimum Level 3 qualification in Childcare, with the Manager holding HNC (level 4) in childhood studies.  All staff hold an up to date Paediatric First Aid and child protection training.

Sue Borgars is our SENCO at Marriott’s who has up to date training on special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) issues e.g. speech and language development, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, and PECS Communication System.

All staff also receive training from outside agencies that are relevant to the needs of specific children in their care.

Staff meetings are held regularly to share strategies, knowledge and experience and to ensure consistency of approach for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

8.           How accessible is the setting environment? (Indoors and outdoors)

Our setting is fully accessible spread over one level. We have changing facilities with an easy accessible toilet available.

The garden is safe and secure and again on one level.

We aim to cater for every child’s individual needs.

9.           How will the setting prepare and support my child to join the setting and transfer to a new setting/ primary school?

Families are encouraged to visit the setting to ensure that they feel it meets the needs of their child.

Once you have decided to start your child with us at Marriot’s we will arrange a date for a pre start session with you and your child. This will provide an opportunity to share information with us about your child. A welcome pack will be given to you with forms to fill out sharing more information which will be placed in your child’s online learning journal.

Transition to Primary school is carefully planned with Transition Meetings held between parents, nursery staff and the receiving school to pass on information and agree an appropriate Transition Plan e.g. staff visits, school visits etc.

Preparing the children for transition plays an important part in our planning and we make regular use of role play, stories and photograph books to support the children through this process.

10.         How are the settings resources allocated and matched to children’s special educational needs?

Marriott’s Nursery is well resourced however if when drawing up your child’s next steps we identify equipment or resources that we do not have, we would do our very best to acquire them.

11.         How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child will receive?

Once other agencies have become involved the setting and the parents can establish the next steps in supporting the child. This includes any resources/equipment we may need to purchase, the extra support that the child needs to receive, producing an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for the child which will be monitored and reviewed regularly, and also discussing what impact the support has had on the child.

12.         How are parents involved in the setting? How can I be involved?

Parents have a daily contact with staff when dropping off and picking up children.
